Augmented Reality (AR) is a new research area, which aims at augmenting user's perception on surrounding real environments by superimposing computer generated virtual information onto video sequences.Since 1990, researches of AR prototypes have made great progress and promoted its use in various areas. But, the lack of realistic visual effects in these prototypes prevents its extensive applications. In order to achieve realistic merging effects between real and virtual, following researches have been made based on AR applications:1. According to the research of AR prototypes and analysis of realistic rendering algorithms, we conclude that the key point to achieve realistic rendering in AR is to render affluent texture details onto surface of virtual objects and realize correct occluding effects between real and virtual.2. Based on the needs for realistic textures in AR, texture mapping is employed to improve appearance details, which includes mainly three steps, such as texture initialization, virtual rendering and texture mapping process.3. After comparisons between typical occlusion algorithms and needs analysis for such characteristics as moving occluder and real-time culling in AR, we present an automatic approach for resolving dynamic occlusions in AR by using graphics techniques. Comparisons with other typical algorithms are also given.4. The implementation of realistic occlusion system is depicted from the following three aspects: the hardware architecture, overall process and developing platform. Experiment is given to illustrate the detail process. Fine results show that our algorithm is feasible and effective.
