Client/Server(C/S) model is often used in traditional distributed streaming media systems. All clients request resources from the server. In C/S model, when the number of clients increases rapidly, the resources of server such as bandwidth will run out quickly because of the characters of media service such as high bandwidth, long lasting time and so on, which becomes the bottleneck of the whole system; on the other hand, network congestion will occur because of the network connections of long distance and the joint of enormous members. Compared with other traditional network service, the performance of streaming media systems based on C/S model is not so good, especially in scalability, suitability, fault tolerance, robustness and so on. These problems can be well solved by peer-to-peer network for its distinct characteristics. However, proper peer-to-peer network should be constructed for the characteristics of streaming media. At present, many topologies are available, but most of them can not hold high efficiency and good stability at the same time. For these reasons, Multi-tier-P2P Network is proposed, which includes two layers. The lower layer is Cluster which is organized in the way of centralized P2P network. Each node is engaged in different cluster as a node of the cluster. The upper layer is Chord, which use Chord routing protocol to maintain the upper structure. Clusters join in Chord as virtual nodes. This paper gives a systematically elaboration on Multi-tier-P2P Network, and describes the topological structure, data structures and protocol algorithms of Multi-tier-P2P Network. Then, the design and implementation of steaming media on-demand system are introduced in detail in the paper. In the end, the thesis offers a simulation and physical environmental testing. The simulation verifies that the new P2P structure is good at searching efficiency, system stability, load balancing and high scalability.
