Key Technology Research Of Iovm On Smart-vm

Virtualization technology provides the ability to run multiple Operating Systems on one computer hardware by inserting virtualization layer between Operating System and hardware, which can significantly improve hardware utilization, cost down and reduce energy consumption. Virtualization technology has received very much attention from computer researching groups, the application of virtualization technology in IT infrastructure has created a hot market, many virtualization products have been introduced and some of them proved to be great successes. The virtualization market booms and shows huge potential. Especially cloud computing proved to be successful in recent years, which creates big market demand for virtualization technology.Legacy VMM processed I/O device isolation, scheduling and sharing, however new research effort try to move these functions into independent IOVM, which deal with all I/O operations and sharing for Guest VM. IOVM are managed and scheduled by the VMM, and there are efficient communication mechanism and memory sharing mechanism between VMM and IOVM, which provide better isolation, more security and good performance.This paper introduced the advance in virtualization technology. Details on the I/O virtualization is described, including device model, device isolation and sharing which was implemented completely in software, and hardware-assisted I/O virtualization technology.Finally, this paper explained the architecture of Smart-VM, which try to reach the goal of a light weight VMM base on Intel VT platform, and explained IOVM software architecture and implementation in detail.
