With the continuous improvement of modern computers, virtualization has now become a popular topic in both research area and industry area again for its advantage in aspects such as resource usage efficiency, security and reliability. Virtualization has been a success in enterprise applications, but due to the restriction of the usage model, desktop virtualization has not been widely adopted. This restriction is mainly caused by the poor graphics processing capability of traditional virtual machine monitors. There have been researches on how to solve this problem, but since all the existing virtual machine monitors (VMM), such as Xen, KVM and VMWare, which support full virtualization, use pure software emulation approach to virtualize hardware devices, it does not provide significant performance boost. This paper presents Gracias (Graphic Card Direct Assignment), which directly assign a graphics card to a certain virtual machine. Thus, access request from device driver of the graphic card in virtual machine will not cause any traps into the virtual machine monitor and the request will be handled directly by the hardware instead of software emulation. This makes the programs that have high demand on graphic processing obtain much better performance than using ordinary virtualization approaches. Gracias greatly improves the graphics processing power of virtual machines through graphics card direct assignment, breaks the bottleneck of traditional desktop virtualization technology, at the mean time provides a new usage model for end users.
