China is a large country of shipping industry and the majority of import and export cargos were achieved by maritime transportation. The shipping industry plays a dominant role in our foreign trade transportation. Ships serve in a strong corrosive environment of sea water,thus coating becomes the key to ship maintenance and draw much attention of a ship company. With the rapid development of computer hardware and software 3D technology has become increasingly wide range of applications in the ship selection,design,construction etc. With the external requests from competent authority,leasing,etc. of improving ship safety management capability and information transparency,a strong demand generated from the classification societies and ship companies of improving the management level of serve ships.Therefore, in this paper the author develop a ship coating management information system based on 3D models with the application of Visual Basic 2005 as the development tool and SQL Server 2005 as the database in .NET framework. With the help of this system the process of coating maintenance be computerized and 3D visualized. Furthermore reduce the influence of human control and improve the efficiency and the cost of coating maintenance.Three-dimensional visualization technology in coating application of management information systems is the core content of this article. Here we use CATIA V5 R18 3D software as a modeling tool to establish solid model of ship coating, and use XML as the transfer format to accomplish data exchange between XML documents and databases by using the ADO.NET data access technology. Moreover,we made a secondary development of the data interface provided by CATIA and 3DXMLplayer to generate lightweight models that are easy to navigate and to interact with those systems.Based on the good understanding of coating maintenance requirements of the shipping companies we made the system with main interface design,coating state fill and document output,browsing and inquiry coating area calculate and systems management totally five main modules. Construction of ship coating maintenance coatings business information management systems based on the 3D ship models help achieve the coating process of completing the inspection maintenance coatings and maintenance and query information,generate status reports coatings and coating inspection work orders and other functions. For feedback maintenance records during the coating process,automated information on the implementation of the coating statistics,analytical work to generate a damage rate and a way to reflect the current state of cloud coating damage state of the ship,as well as regional and structural elements based on the compartment to Painting an area basis, reasonable arrangements for painting schedule. The development of this system can meet the requirements of shipping companies to increase the level of ship operational management and realize the scientific management of the ship coating.
