Ocean is our precious natural resources, the exploitaion of ocean resources is an important task in in the world today. The technique of 3D seabed terrain visualization is an important means for oceanic research, it plays an important role in the fields of marine resources exploration and development, subsea pipelines construction, seabed geological study, undersea environment surveying and so on.Based on the methodology of 3D computer graphics, geographic information system and computer visualization, this paper studies the theory and method of 3D visualization of seabed terrain. The main tasks are:Firstly, the thesis comments the theory, technique and method of 3D terrain visualization based on OpenGL, and makes the design flow and implement measure of 3D seabed terrain visualization system.Then, the thesis uses bathymetric survey data as data sources, constructs 3D seabed terrain model with the help of Catmull-Rom interpolation algorithms.Finally, the thesis takes VC++6.0 and OpenGL as the developing tools, builds a 3D seabed terrain visualization system. This system can display the grd file sounding grid data in 3D terrain form, also can proceed man-computer interaction operation, include enlarging, dwindling, rotating and apparent angle changing, then the seabed terrain can be observed in different forms.
