Objective To study the prevalence of substance addiction and internet addiction disorder (IAD), explore its related factors among urban adolescents in Nanyang City, so as to provide scientific bases for intervention measures.Materials and Methods1. Object. A sampling frame was established in 31 middle schools (including secondary technical schools) and universities.5 junior middle schools,3 senior middle schools,3 secondary technical schools and 2 comprehensive universities were selected by a multi-stage random sampling method. Stratified cluster sampling was conducted using a class as a unit. An anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted for investigation of addiction behavior (including IAD, smoking, alcohol drinking and drug abuse) among 3637 students from these 13 urban schools. The surveyed students include 1205 junior middle school students,1214 senior middle school students,641 secondary technical school students and 577 college students from 11 to 24 years old. Male to female ratio is 1.23:1.2. Investigation of questionnaire. By use of risk behavior questionnaire, titled "China's Youth Health-related Behavior", designed by Chinses CDC.3. Methods. A series of strict quality control measures were adopted to collect, sort out, and perform entry processes. The survey data were input and checked by using EpiData3.0 software and analyzed by the SPSS12.0 analysis software.Results1. Substance addiction. The prevalence of those who had ever tried smoking, regular smoking, heavy smoking,tried drinking, regular drinking,heavy drinking were 38.44%,10.15%,0.83%,70.91%,12.90%,12.54%,18.67% respectively; A chi-square test showed that the difference among the prevalence of groups in school types, gender, and emotional status was statistically significant (P<0.01) except for heavy smoking. The rate of students who had used sedative-hypnotic, compound cough syrup, organic solvents, tramadol hydrochloride and drug were 9.24%,5.61%, 4.43%,0.85%,0.85%. The prevalence of substance abuse for male was higher than that for female except for sedative-hypnotic abuse and compound cough syrup abuse (P<0.05). A chi-square test showed that the difference between the prevalence of organic solvents, sedative-hypnotic and drug abuse in different types of schools was statistically significant (P<0.05). The prevalence of substance abuse in negative emotions group was higher than that in non-negative emotions group (P<0.01)2. Internet addiction. The net surfing rate of adolescents was 85.9%. The net surfing rate of male students 87.6% was significantly higher than that of female 83.3%(P< 0.01). The tendency of IAD rate was 7.34%. It was 10.72% in the male and 3.49% in the female. The IAD rate was 2.39%. It was 3.59% in the male and 0.92% in the female. There was a statistical significance of IAD between the male and female students or among students in different schools and psychological characters (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic analysis indicated that the good school achievements were the protecting factors and male, using internet more than 4 hours per day, negative psychological characteristics and suicidal ideation were the risk factors of IAD.3. Correlation analysis. A significantly correlation was found between Internet addiction and substance addiction through statistical analysis of the data. There was also certain correlation among the different addictive substances abuse.Conclusions The prevalence of addictive behaviors of the urban adolescents in Nanyang at a medium level. Addictive behaviors are the result of diverse and complex factors. There is difference in gender, school and psychological characteristics. The susceptible population of addictive behaviors includes young men, secondary technical school students, people have negative mood and suicide idea. There is association between internet addiction and substance addiction behaviors. This situation should be paid high attention to and some intervention activities should be carried out by families, schools and the society to prevent and reduce the occurrence of addictive behavior.
