Purpose:To observe the function of combined traditional and western medicine in treating optic atrophy caused by retinitis pigmentosa.Methods:The 62 cases of patients of optic atrophy caused by retinitis pigmentosa were divided into three groups, which were group 1 treated by combined traditional and western medicine, group 2 treated by traditional medicine and acupuncture and group 3 treated by vasodilating agent (VA) and neurotrophy medicine at random.Compare in many aspects, such as eyesight, field of vision, etc before and after the treatment and between the three groups.Results:(1) Although the three groups' curative effects exceed 50%, group 1 is significantly superior to group 2 and 3 (p<0.05) and there is no significant difference between group 2 and 3 (p> 0.05); (2) In study of eyesight, group 1 and 2 were effective and group 1 was superior to group 2 (p<0.05); (3) In study about field of vision, the three groups were all effective and group1 was superior to the others (p<0.05). There was no difference between group 2 and 3 (p>0.05);Conclusion:Combined traditional and western medicine treatment is effective in treating optic atrophy caused by retinitis pinmentosa.
