[Objective] To investigate the air quality of office buildings and furthermore explore the relationship between the environment quality and occurrence of sick building syndrome among staff working in these office buildings.[Method] The office buildings, including both use and non-use of central air-conditioning were investigated. The air environment of the office room was measured and the health situation of the people who work in the office was asked. The five Personal Symptom Index (5-PSI, i.e. eye dry or ache, stuffy nose, throat dry or ache, headache and weary feeling) were used to identify and analyze its relation between the appearance of the symptoms and the environment indexes.[Result] The ammonia, the noise, the humidity and the amount of new wind were the primary factors affecting quality in the office building's environment with central air conditioning; while the formaldehyde, the ammonia, the noise, the temperature and the degree of illumination were primary factors in the office building's environment without central air conditioning. The individuals who work in the office building with central air conditioning or not have the SBS symptom frequency of occurrence respectively is 13.2% and 10.2%. Weary, the eye dry or the ache, the skin dry, forgetful, the headache was ranked as major symptom.[Conclusion] The ambient temperature, the ambient humidity, the amount of new wind in the office building had the correlation with SBS occurrence and they were major affecting factor for SBS among these investigated buildings.
