for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the supervision ofprofessors Xiao Pei Gen, Chen Jian Min (Institute of Medicinal PlantDevelopment, Peking Union Medical College and Chinese Academy ofMedical Sciences, Beijing 100094, China) June. 1997This dissertation deals with the studies on phytochemistry, analytical chemistry and pharmacology of the Chinese medicinal plants: Clinopodium chinensis and Clinopodium polycephalum. From the whole plant of C. polycephalum, thirty one(Y1-Y31) compounds were isolated. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic (IR, UV, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, 1H-1HCOSY, 13C-1HCOSY, HMBC, EI-MS, CI-MS, FAB-MS,X-ray)and chemical methods. The major part of them is flavones and dihydroflavones. A summary of their 13C-NMR characters was made. With bioassay directed, we devised the isolation procedures of C. chinensis and C. polycephalum. Active blood constituent for this traditional drug was reported for the first time. The homeostatic function was confirmed and the possible position of stopping bleeding was discussed. In the meantime, seven compounds were isolated and determined from C. chinensis.By means of HPLC, saponin and flavones were analyzed from 8 Clinopodium species. A HPLC analysis method of Clinopodside A in tablet of DUAN XUE LIU was also established.13C-NMR shift consult program (CNSC) was made to establish a personal 13C-NMR shift database including the compounds from C. polycephalum and a part of triterpenoids. CNSC has a character that the mixture will also be "fitted" individually.
