ObjectiveThis study aimed to survey current status of personality characteristics, psychological coping styles, diabetes empowerment ability, and diabetes self-care behaviors of 175 patients with diabetes from five upper first-class hospitals in Hangzhou. To analyze the related factor of empowerment ability of hospitalized diabetes mellitus patients. To explore the relationship among empowerment ability> self-care behavior and metabolic markers of hospitalized diabetes mellitus patients.MethodsThis descriptive correlation study examined 175 diabetic patients conveniently sampled from endocrinology wards of five upper first-class hospitals in Hangzhou with Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ), Trait Coping Style Questionnaire(TCSQ), Diabetes Empowerment Scale-Short Form (DES-SF) and Diabetes self-care behavior scale. Data were analyzed with SPSS12 by descriptive analysis, ANOVA, Spearrman's correlation and multivariate stepwise linear regression.ResultsThe univariate analysis of factors related to the empowerment of hospitalized diabetes mellitus patients identified 9 variables are of significance to empowerment, including E score in personality, L score, positive coping strategies, negative coping strategies, exercise management in self-care, gender, education, annual income, regular follow-up. With the empowerment as dependent variable and the nine above-mentioned variables as independent variables, multivariate stepwise linear regression revealed only positive coping strategies, male, concealment and regular follow-up were integrated into the equation, with the regression coefficient of 0.28,0.14,0.143,0.199, respectively. Analysis of the effect of empowerment on the metabolic parameters and self-care behavior of hospitalized diabetes mellitus patients showed empowerment positively correlates to waist circumference, but negatively to glycated hemoglobin.ConclusionExtraversion personality dominates in diabetes mellitus patients with strong concealment. Most diabetes mellitus patients'take positive coping strategies. Diabetes mellitus.patients are of moderate self-care level, with better drug management and poor exercise management and foot care. Diabetes mellitus patients have medium empowerment, on which many factors have influence, including E score in personality, L score, positive coping strategies, negative coping strategies, gender, education, annual income, regular follow-up. Diabetes mellitus patients'empowerment positively correlates to waist circumference, diet care and foot care, but negatively to glycated hemoglobin.
