The Old Town Of Suzhou City Narrative Space Research

The appearance of Spatial Narratology made the mergence of Narratology and theories of city design become possible. In theory of Spatial Narratoloy, the buildings, squares, blocks of city should be treated as narrative spaces. In macroscopic, the city itself can be treated as a huge narrative space also. This article use the historic region of Suzhou to be the research object, try to analyze the city narrative spatial structure of historic region of Suzhou and seize the characteristics and essence of it, use those conclusions to enforce and improve the theory of city narrative spatial structure, and support inferences to city design and city planning nowadays.This article can be divided into three parts. First part included 1 and 2 chapters. The main mission of it is trying to use the theory of Spatial Narratology to deepen and enforce the Image of City theory which raised by Lynch Kevin, and construct a research method on city narrative space to make a correctly express on the substance and literature. Second part included 3 to 6 chapters. The main aim of it is using research method of city narrative space to research the historic region of Suzhou. First, it divided the development process of historic region of Suzhou into some periods, summarized the factors appeared in every periods and divided them into some kinds, then to use the Mapping method to illustrate factors in visible region form on the maps of Suzhou in those periods. For that, it constructed the city narrative spatial structure of every periods and whole process of historic region of Suzhou, and summarized the narrative spatial characteristics of it. According to the research above, it found and analyzed the important visible region clusters in the city narrative spatial structure of historic region of Suzhou. Then this article analyzed the city narrative spatial structure of historic region of Suzhou in microscopic and macroscopic. The third part is the conclusion of this article. It defined the research methods and concepts which rose above, summarized the main success of city narrative spatial structure of historic region of Suzhou, and pointed out its guild meanings on the rebuilding of historic city.
