Japan's Public Art History And Current Status

Thanks to the invitation of making a on-the-spot investigation into Japanese Public Art at the end of 2006, the author had mastered a great deal of firsthand information. Therefore, this article will synthesize principles of culturology and art; considerate of different theories and viewpoints from painting, sociology, city design, art philosophy etc; spread up discussions upon the history, present situation as well as problems in the processes of development with an emphasize on FARET Tachikawa - the famous public art area in Japan; introduce the Japanese model which is focusing on systematicness, scienceness, entertainment and humanity; and look into connections between public art and public space by analyzing cultivation of modern Japanese.The author believed that the study on Japanese city public art and city public space will give important reference to domestic study, at least, show us the future prospection in this field. Moreover, I hope the above probes are helpful to improve the domestic cognition level of public art, and provide feasibility reference.
