Modern Urban Public Space System

Of late years, persons on the field of architecture come to pay more attention to spaces of city as well as the ones on the field of city plan and urban design do. We architects recognized the fact that urban buildings cannot survive without city. We cannot get good building unless we bring a harmony between the building and the city. The concept of space comes from brain, and it will mean nothing without human. The same thing is between city and society. Here we attempt to study the social aspects that affect the mechanism of city form despite of what we have learnt from the traditional architectural education.Public sites in city is extremely important not only to our city but to our social life. As we know human, a kind of social animal, have a significant physical demand of communicating with others. Public site is the very material support for meeting the demand. And China is experiencing a very rapid progress of urbanism with the fast economic development, which bring us many new problems. One of these is that we now have new component in our society that is similar to the so-called public sphere in western society. As the maybe vessel of the new component, public sites can be the material foundation of modern urban life. So we put our view on public sites and utilize it for cutting in the field.All the three of things, behavior in city, the structure of an urban society and the living style of a city, are tljree complicated systems. So the public sites of a city form a system corresponding the three ones. And we should study it by a systematic method. As a subsystem of city system, public sites play a more special role in the operation of city than other spaces. The status of can affect the public's behavior custom and the mentality of society that can impact on the public's attitude to the city form and the public sites. The mechanism of thismutual affection is the most interesting to us.This paper is composed of five parts.The first part is the opening words. In this part we discuss the importance of public sites and the start point of our research.The second part is the basic conceptions. It consists of three sections. The first is mainly about conception of public site. And hi the second section we classify the public sites by the public character. Then we introduce our method of study briefly in the third section.The third part is the analysis on the public character of public sites in city. In this part we analysis how the varies elements affect the public character of a space in detail from three levels.The fourth part is on the public sites system. In this part we analysis the structure of the public sites system and the properties of the system.The fifth part is an analysis on conenoses of public sites.
