Asphalt treated base (ATB) material shows superior performance in compression strength, stiffness, stress-extension, crack-healing, rapidness in construction, low repair cost and long life. Meanwhile ATB material ensures continuous contact to upper asphalt course, which reduces shear and bend stresses in asphalt courses, thus effectively reduces DOWN— TOP crack in asphalt pavement. There are some differences in mix design method between ATB and Asphalt Concrete (AC), because their vertical positions and functions in pavement structure are different. This paper designed ATB mixtures by the method recommended by Technical Specifications for Construction of Highway Asphalt Pavement, SUPERPAVE mixture design method, Bailey gradation design method, and mechanics mixture design method. Through analyses of volume and mechanics indexes and pavement performance of ATB mixtures under different design methods, the proper design method of ATB is proposed in this paper. Then the paper systematically studied the pavement performance of ATB material, the test results show that ATB has good resistance to vertical deformation, fatigue and moisture-sensitivity. Based on ATB Test Road paving, the paper studied on the effect of different construction techniques on paving quality, and recommends reasonable construction process and quality control standard. Causes of vertical segregation, as a special and annoying phenomenon in ATB paving, were discussed, and some prevention technologies are suggested.
