| Researches on Chinese traditional dwelling houses began in the 1940s. From 1980s, more and more researchers are interested in it, and a lot of manuscripts and papers are published. We can study from traditional dwellings, because it is the precious treasure of their building experiences, practical skills and design methods for today's new buildings with national characteristics and local style.In the analysis, on-the-spot investigation and case study combined, we draw the theoretical conclusions based on detailed examination. This study comparably explores the existent traditional courtyard dwellings in North China as research emphasis. Difference and regular can be found out, after a comparable analysis of all kinds of dwellings in an area. Because they represent the most advanced level of skills, arts and culture of that time (the Ming and Qing Dynasties), which other normal inhabitation without complete preservation do not have.Based on the investigation and a review of literatures, data on dwelling houses in North China, we examined the relations and differences between different areas in North China from various aspects and levels, and try to get some new insight about courtyard buildings. By dint of related references such as historical records, social chronicles, we summarize the history origin, cultural background, local style and design technique, through in-depth study on the local culture, space and building skills, decoration and furniture.This dissertation is organized as follows:Chapter 1 preface.
