In the actual service, the too low power of DF5 locomotive influences the shunting work to certain extent. To solve this problem and to suit the changing of main railway technical policy, CSR Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co., Ltd. decided to research and develop 12V240ZJ diesel engine to improve the power of shunting locomotive.Under this background, this topic mainly researches the special requirement of the diesel engine to shunting locomotive and the design of the main system of 12V240ZJ diesel engine. The prototype has been certified through test and the test result indicates that the performance indices of 12V240ZJ diesel engine have met the design requirement. The specified work of the article mainly is mainly indicated as follows:(1) The modification design of 12V240ZJ diesel engine has been done based on the 240 series diesel engine. Supercharge system, fuel system and crankshaft series closely related to the series modification design are analyzed and calculated; The formal configuration of 12V240ZJ diesel engine is determined through the comparison between the performances of the various solutions; For the determined configuration solution, the performance test of the whole diesel engine has been done and the universal characteristics of the whole diesel engine has been analyzed.(2)The certification test of 12V240ZJ diesel engine has been done, including: performance inspection of diesel engine, 100-hour performance test, 360-hour endurance test and disassemble inspection after test. No interruption caused by failure of the diesel engine occurs during the tests, with stable performance and reliable work, and thevarious data conform to the design requirement.(3 ) Based on the explanation of the necessity of the electronic injection technology of 12V240ZJ diesel engine, the selection and the modification design of PPN electronic injection system of 12V240ZJ diesel engine is finished through the investigation and the analysis of the present electronic injection system. The performance of the prototype adopting PPN electronic injection system has been trial-tested.
