Virtual design is a new research area developed in recent years. It integrates manifold modern high-tech, and has a revolutionary effect on conventional design technology, so now it has attracted widely attentions of the kingdoms of science and enterprise. Cam mechanism is an important transmission mechanism, and applied in various machine equipments, therefore the study on how to design and manufacture it is a hotspot all along. In this paper, the technology of MATLAB software, VRML, virtual design system and cam mechanism are studied deeply, then an idea is put forward that a virtual design system could be developed based on MATLAB and VRML. Subsequently, a virtual design framework for cam mechanism is constructed, which can create the spatial modeling of cam according to the parameters set by user, and display the three-dimensional graphics of cam mechanism real-timely, and simulate the movement of cam mechanism in virtual environment.In the paper, the processes of realizing the virtual design of various cam mechanisms are expatiated on principle, method and approach, and the method of developing this virtual design system is explained by designing the whole software and its function modules. Based on MATLAB and VRML, the virtual design system framework for cam mechanism is constructed, and the flow diagram for programming the software of virtual design system with MATLAB language is established. The principles of creating VRML files for various cam mechanisms are expounded. The frameworks of VRML files for cam mechanism' s virtual scene are planed. The Simulink models of cam mechanism' s movement simulation are modeled. A method to Real-timely create virtual scene by timely generating VRML file of cam mechanism is brought forward. The functions of system are realized, such as creating three-dimensional graphics according to cam mechanism' s parameters,displaying and controlling the graphics, analyzing the movement performance and size optimization, movement simulating, and so on. It is also introduced with examples about how to run and use this software. Lastly, the research in this paper is summarized, and then some expectations are given.The realization of this system facilitates the quick design of cam mechanism and its virtual simulation. At the same time, the realization of this system has indicated that the idea about constructing a virtual design system based on MATLAB and VRML is feasible. With the idea, MATLAB' s and VRML' s strongpoint can be taken advantage of effectively, which is helpful for shortening the time of programming and improving the software' s capability.This paper will provide some foundation for deeper research on constructing virtual design system based on MATLAB and VRML, and contribute to the progress of research on virtual design in our country.
