Virtual Reality (VR), newly sprung up in the late 20th century, is a comprehensive informational technology. Virtual prototyping, based on Virtual Reality and 3D CAD, plays a more and more important role in mechanical industry. It benefits of reducing product design cycle, lowering life-time cost and improving quality because of applying VP. Through analyzing of the development tendency of Virtual Reality and Virtual Design, The paper researches on virtual design of mechanical product deeply, and discusses the human-computer interactive mode in virtual environment, and provides the methods of building Virtual Prototyping System of mechanical product.The main achievements and creative ideas of the dissertation are as follows:(1) The methods and processes of 3D product modeling in SolidWorks platform are discussed by analyzing 3D Mechanical product modeling in the orientation of Virtual Design and are applied to modeling of gantry crane in Jia Jiang Hydraulic Machinery Works. The importance of using virtual prototyping in mechanical product design is discussed.(2) The modeling methods of virtual product are researched deeply, The mode of VRML combined with Java is taken as developing tool in the Virtual Design System, taking the current status of small and middle enterprises into account by comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the three tools-Cult3D, ISB and VRML.(3) Concept of VRML, a 3D modeling language which is used on internet widely, is introduced. Several key techniques are studied, including Modeling, LOD (level of detail), Texture Mapping,are discussed, and suitable VRML Browser and Editor are selected.(4) The forming technique of VP based on VRML is researched. The methods and processes of VP modeling are discussed, and are applied to switch cabinets used in small and middle transformer substation. The Optimization of VRML files and VRML model renderings, two methods of optimizing virtual model are put forward.(5) A Virtual Prototyping System based VRML-Java is constructed combined with the techniques of Data Base and Web. Human-computer interaction is realized in virtual environment.
