21st century is the time of globalization and informatization of manufacturing industry and technology innovation. The Internet technology has great influences on the development of manufacturing industry and the service of information communication, and it is changing the CAD/CAM enviroment to a distributed one centring on the net. The R&D of digital product undergos following steps: CAD tool of 2D/3D→3D system→Digital factory and so on.The VP (Virtual Prototyping) technology based on virtual reality and three-dimensional CAD technology plays an important part in mechanical industry. And then the introduction of VP (Virtual Prototyping) technology is making remarkable senses on shortening the Cyc of product development, reducing the cost of product life Cyc and improving product quality. Through analyzing of the development tendency of Virtual Reality and Virtual Design, the paper investigates deeply on virtual design of mechanical product based on VRML technology, and discusses the human-computer interactive mode in virtual environment, and provides the methods of building Virtual Prototyping System of mechanical product.The main achievements and creative ideas of the dissertation are as follows:(1) The methods and processes of 3D product modeling in UG and3D-MAX platform are discussed by analyzing 3D Mechanical product modeling in the orientation of Virtual Design and are applied to modeling of switch cabinets. The importance of using virtual prototyping in mechanical product design is discussed.(2) The modeling methods of virtual product are researched deeply.
