With the development of the Three Gorges Project and national network interconnection project in China, the network of power system is becoming more large and complex, which make it more necessary to reinforce the reliability of power system.Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS) has been studied and developed greatly in power system. WAMS is matching of available technology to dynamic information needs. It is a template for dynamic information, which provides a framework and testbed for associated efforts in which the WAMS participants drew together and refined a suite of information tools which meet the need to reinforce the reliability of power system. WAMS reinforce large power system monitoring and analysis, and it will be applied in numerous fields, such as real-time control and protection relaying, EMS/SCADA, etc.Recently, WAMS has been focused by electric administrations in China. It became the prosperous field in the R&D projects of power system. The author of the dissertation took part in the CEPRI project of Wide Area Measurement. The dissertation provides the researches as follows: Illuminate and analysis the functions and usage of Wide Area Measurements, and bring forward the designation of the infrastructure of dynamic behavior monitoring system. Present the technological requirement for the dynamic system monitors, based on which, the principle of the synchrophasor measurement is analyzed, and a more accurate synchrophasor algorithm is presented and tested. Establish the criterion designation of the Phasor Measurement Unit. Deliberate the usage of the real time operation system in the PMU software designation, and the Internet communication in the PMU. Review the current application of Wide Area Measurements technology, and analyze and forecast the future application of wide area measurements.
