Underwater plasma sound source, namely underwater sparker, is a significant application of pulsed discharge in water, which has been employed for underwater acoustics and sea oil prospecting. As for the underwater plasma sound source, it is necessary to deepen the research work, not only in the level of application, but also in the level of mechanism. For one thing, we need to get rid of the deficiency of underwater plasma sound source. For another thing, we should make the mechanism of initiation of pulsed discharge clearer to guide the development of plasma sound source.In this thesis, a set of experimental system has been designed, first of all. Then a digital acquisition and processing platform of the experimental data, which consists of the Tektronix oscilloscope and desktop computer, has been developed. The software of the platform has a friendly interface, a good expandability, and a nice coordination with the hardware. Then, the electrical characteristics of underwater plasma sound source has been researched. In this section, a numerical simulation of the plasma sound source's discharge loop has been given. Consequently, the trend of the relationship between the channel resistance and time has been given. In the experiment, two types of underwater pulsed discharge-arc discharge and corona discharge, have been performed, under different experiment parameters. The voltage and current data in the experiment have been collected and analyzed. By comparison and summary, we think, the pulsed corona discharge can provide a new design thought for the underwater plasma sound source. Next, the mechanism of the underwater pulsed electrical prebreakdown has been investigated. Based on the special physical and chemistry properties of water and microcosmic dynamics, a anode streamer theory and a cathode streamer theory have been explored and analyzed.
