Passenger car, the high-tech outcome of modern society, represents one of most advanced technologies generated from various industries. During the 1980's, the perfecting technology in master car body modeling had resulted in a brandnew era for the technologies involved in design and manufacture of car bodies-both interiorly and exteriorly.Research and application of such master models are prevailing in the industry now. To take the greatest advantages of the Chinese car market in a long run, advanced technologies regarding master modeling have long been blocked out by foreign counterparts, who finally would be well positioned for higher prices when master drawing versions and complete vehicle moulds are introduced to China. As a result, this has led to fewer varieties, sluggish remodeling, short of its own IPR and master modeling technologies in China PCs.With the support of its own technological forces, the Plant had successfully developed two outer master car models for the "Lark "and "Chinastar" respectively. The outer master model for "Lark" was one of the most important research projects revealed by Guizhou Aviation Industry Corporation in speeding up the localization process of the mini-car project under " Lark" which was listed in the project catalog by relevant national authorities. The outer master model for "Chinastar" was a self-developed project with the expectation of upgrading the body manufacturing quality and forming mass production capacity for the mini-car project under "Chinastar" .The outer master model, a tri-dimensional model in full dimension with the scale of 1:1 in comparison to the real car itself (regardless of the thickness for surface material of the body), reflects sectionally the geometrical appearance, dimensional precision, consolidated concordance and other relevant elements within an unlimited tangent plane. The aluminum castings for each section are separately designed and incorporated to a center frame with the help of conical levels and refined bolts in respect of the product dimensions to formulate a model that is easily assembled or disassembled. The finalized model provides sound basis for vehicle dies, body weldment fixtures and test tools. The model for "Lark" includes a total of 14 items.with 22 parts while the one for "Chinastar" embodies 16 items, with 24 parts.The outer master model involves multiple manufacturing technologies, and it is complicated in terms of production, technology and coordination work. Thus the workload is huge. The research work for such models adopts digital methods, with the integration of CAD and CAM in full swing, 20 programmable softwares(self-developed), computer skills, large digital graph plotters, large tri-dimensional digital gaugeing machines, digital machine tools, etc. The entire manufacturing process was successfully done with references to the standard sample parts, moulding lines(master drawing version), working principal of master versions and the coordinated technologies in the process and manufacturing of airplanes when measuring the sample cars, formulating mathematical car models, plotting the master drawings and models for digital process of separate parts, machining the finished center frames, assembling parts for the master model (including critical path network and TQC). In so doing, the quality of the outer master model is assured.The research and development of the master model have resulted in the settlement of 12 key technical issues and made breakthroughs in 6 major technical aspects.High potential values bury in the research and development of such master models in the auto industry of China in terms of technology, provided that the technology is well promoted and applied and actual significance can be deemed in China's self-development of passenger cars, especially concerning the body manufacturing technology.The design and manufacturing technology of the above-mentioned outer mini-car models havevwell reached the advanced international level during the 1980's.
