Since the concept of "passive energy dissipation" came into being in the early 1970s, scholars of many countries in this domain started their researches and studies on this subject. Up to today, research findings on the mechanism of different types of damper and the computation method of passive energy dissipation has become more and more complete and sophisticated, with passive energy dissipation technology entered into the phase of practical application. The impact of the idle stroke of viscous damper on the efficiency of passive energy dissipation discussed in this paper happens to be one of the new problems arose from the practical application of passive energy dissipation. This paper, on the foundation of existed research products of passive energy dissipation technology, firstly expatiates the cause of the idle stroke of damper and thereon reaches a conclusion after a detailed analysis of the influence of idle stoke on the earthquake reaction of structures by adopting time history analysis. The paper then, brings forward a new equivalent computation method, which is more straightforward and convenient while estimating the impact of the idle stroke of damper. Relevant time history analysis programme is furthermore worked out on the basis of the above mentioned method and supporting examples as well as illustrations are given. At the end of the paper, the author provides some measures which are able to eliminate or reduce the idle stoke of damper for further consideration and discussion. |
