Swelling rock, a special kind of clay, is different from loess, laterite, soft soil, frozen soil and common clay. It is composed of a great deal of strong hydrophilic clay minerals, such as montmorillonite and illite. The study of swelling rock is one of the most complicated world subjects. The first issue during construction in expansive soil region is to determine whether the soil is of expansive behavior or not. In this thesis, three methods, i.e., fuzzy mathematics, gray system theory and neural network are used in this paper for soil classification. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are also evaluated and discussed.Shear strength is also discussed in this paper for its importance in the study of swell rock. Direct shear tests including slow consolidated-drained direct shear test and quick direct shear test, for swelling rock sampled from the Nanjing Meishan Ferrous Mine and Dalian new port have been conducted. The factors affect the shear strength and the relationship of strength parameters and water content are discussed.
