With the advances in LCOS panel, LCOS projector is the only way to utilize a high resolution and micromation of the projector. Thus we require more intense, focused light with lower etendue values. The design theory, analysis and realization of micro LCOS Projector are studied in detail in this paper. The system is analyzed by the introduction of non-imaging optics. Design and initial structures of the usual optical instruments in LCOS projectors are thoroughly studied, and thus provide a stable theoretic basis for the whole system. The software TracePro is used to simulate the system, and two complete projecting systems are established. The performance of the system is synthetically evaluated, design procedure and the characteristics of the system is discussed and analyzed.Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction of the history and the development of projectors, and different projecting view methods are classified. The structure and principles of LCOS projectors are analyzed and design requirement of the illuminating system of micro LCOS projectors are put forward based on the principles and its development.Chapter 2 studied non-imaging optical systems. It introduced origins of the non-imaging optical theories and its difference to the imaging optical theory. It discussed maximum concentration ratio, lagrange invariant etendue and an important analytic method in non-imaging optical theories, edge-ray method. At the end, itendue of the projecting system is analyzed and designing requirements are presented.Chapter 3 discussed some usual optical instruments in spot source illumination systems. Light sources common in LCD projectors are introduced, and their efficiency, life time and spectrum are explained. In succession, some general optical instruments such as various reflectors, tapered light pipes and micro-lens-arrays are studied.Chapter 4 compared the spot light source with LED, and projectors' illuminatingsystem using LED is studied. CPC concentrators are used to adjust the viewing angles of LED, and FF system could improve the efficiency of surface light source like LED-arrays. Principles of the polarization converter and its coupling with the light pipe are discussed.Chapter 5 analyzed and optimized system from a holistic angle. The simulation software used in this study is TracePro. Evaluating standards are raised basing imaging optical theory and non-imaging optical theory. HID Xenon Lamp and LED from Osram are used as illumination light source in respective systems. Structure and performance of two systems are simulated and explained.Chapter 6 gives a brief conclusion to this thesis and predicts room to improve the design.
