Ming-style furniture, a good example of Chinese traditional creation culture, is known throughout the world for the simple shape, precise structure, superior material, mild decoration and excellent craftsmanship. While, there are still rare research on the formation of Ming-style furniture and it require more development and complement.The plot conception is based on the social historical background against which formed the Ming-style furniture, and it’s mainly discussed in this essay that the relationship is between the Ming-style furniture and the political system, economic and cultural system in Ming dynasty and people’s perception, aesthetics and spiritual culture. The author uses the methods of documents collecting, giving examples and summarizing on the basis of previous research and combines from multidisciplinary works at the nexus of design, history, archaeology and sociology to study this essay, the main body uses the analysis of the social cause, humanistic cause and craftsmanship cause to study the formation causes. In the chapter of’social cause’, on the background of the economic and social situation, the author presented briefly his conception that the alter on the craft service system promoted the crafts status, the open Haijin policy boosted overseas trade directly and reform of the mansion system accelerated the development of urban construction. In the chapter that mostly explored the ’humanistic cause’, from the traditional Chinese philosophical perspectives, the author points out the unique aesthetic taste of the literary intellectuals and proposed that it was an important factor to mature that the literary intellectuals had been involved in the designing. In the craftsmanship cause chapter, the author mainly introduced the high-quality material selection like Huanghuali wood and Zitan wood, suitable wood-working stools of Ming-style furniture and the shape, structure, function and decoration of the prosperous residential buildings and landscape architecture to demonstrate that those factors promoted the development of Ming-style furniture formation.
