Zen is the result of a cultivation method of India. It was introduced to China in theNorthern and Southern dynasties. Then it was introduced east to Japan and formed theJapanese unique aesthetic theory of Zen aesthetics. Zen shows its unique pure feeling withsimple color. Japan respects nature. They formed fabric with design patterns, which wasmost given by natural elements. Due to the particularity of the environment, the Japanesenational psychology are empty of things, which makes clothing design has a uniqueartistic features. Japan’s clothing designers, start from the Zen aesthetics and grasp theopportunity. They create a batch of profound connotation of clothing according to theirown original ideas. Some of them we are familiar, the famous designer Iissey Miyake andhis "pleated","torn" as the design concept of Yohji Yamamoto and Muji minimalistphilosophy spirit. These design concepts embodies with characteristic of Japanese Zenaesthetics.Through consulting a large number of Zen literature, this paper preliminary elaboratethe development of Japanese Zen and the Zen of differences and similarities betweenChinese Zen and Japanese Zen, which is concluded that the Japanese Zen of four types ofbeauty: the beauty of nature, contracted beauty, empty beauty and sorrow beauty.Japanese clothing reflects the strong Japanese Zen tradition clothing ideas combined withthe development of Japan’s apparel; Japanese Zen aesthetics is mainly reflected in thecostumes depicting nature, asymmetry aesthetics, aesthetics and sense of subtraction;Through analysis of two Japanese designer’s,we draw a complementary role of theJapanese Zen aesthetics in apparel development. Japanese clothing as a cultural carrierZen aesthetics shines in the international arena, bringing inspiration for our costumedesign.
