Since 20th century, the formidable function of geographic information system (GIS) has obtained the widespread approval because the research and development of which were utilized in various field. In this dissertation we mainly used GIS, and the ArcGIS9.0 software which performance was quite fine was used to study as the platform by comparative analysis to the GIS softwares digital registration methods of multi-source and multi-type topographic maps. We compared to obtain the most precise digital registration method of topographic maps through digitizing 9 topographic maps of Qingdao City which were under different projecting modes, different geographical coordinate systems and in different scale and finally unit them under the WGS84 geographical coordinate system, entrusted with the same projecting molde and the same scale. Then we took the spatcial form evolution of Qingdao City as the example, and the method we studied was utilized in thoroughly digitization of historic topographic maps of Qingdao City, the Geodatabase was established, the multi-type attribute data were made together such as the economy, the society, the population and so on. Then we unified the spatcial analysis method of GIS and figured out both administrative boundary and the built-up district boundary to provide the foundation data for analyzing the successional variation process of evolution of city spatcial form and the intrinsic mechanism in it comprehensively and quantitatively. Finally we used the spatcial expansion and the real spatcial analysis method to study successional variation process of city spatcial form comprehensively and quantitatively, and exposed the characteristic and evolution of city exterior spatcial form, the spatcial distribution and evolution of urban population, and evolution characteristic and the mechanism of the city spatcial form in order to obtain the intrinsic mechanism of city spatcial form evolution and unify the urban planning strategy of Qingdao at present to propose both optimization and regulation of the city spatcial form and its sustainable development pattern.
