Mine development made huge economic interests while it at the same time destroyed the land resources largely and worsened the ecological environment. It was a serious pressing problem so it has attracted increasing public attentions. The abandoned mine lands restoration was one part of the mine lands sustainable development, and it may be full of practical significance especially to our country for its lack of land resources and weak ecological environment. This paper took Yinhudong abandoned Limestone Mine land of Beijing City as the study area to study the application of 3S (GIS, RS & GPS) technologies in the abandoned land restoration. GIS was applied to establish the 3D terrain surface, picked up terrain breaks and accumulations. The results were checked by the field surveys. On the basis of it, it can pick up geological disaster spots and calculate the geological environment. RS was applied to investigate the land-use and calculate the vegetation environment. By considering of the requests of the study land which keep accordance with the above results, the plan of restoration was established on the basis of the abandoned land restoration theories. At last, this paper also advised the continuous survey of this district to check the result of the restoration. The main results were following:1. 3D GIS Modeling technology can give true appearance of the terrain sight of abandoned mine land. On this 3D model, the steep faces and the waste stone accumulations with big sizes can be picked up and these were matched to the results of field surveys. This 3D model can also profit to the calculation of surface area, volume and other physics factors like that. But because of the big net scale of the DEM and the low contrast of DOM image, this model was poor in showing the details and picking up things with smaller sizes.2. RS had many advantages of picking up vegetation. The results kept accordance to the field surveys and they included the abundant information which was difficult to pick up by field surveys. In addition, the characters like multi-temporal images, big scale and high economic benefits of RS made it to be the superior technology in analyzing vegetations.3. The result of the environment analysis was that both the geological environment status and vegetation environment status were bad in mine district. Mine collapse and landslide were both big problems in this zone, while the threat of mudslide also existed. The land-use structure was simple, and the vegetation out of mine district was well, but it was bad in the mine zone. In mine district, the mine desertification was seriously. Fortunately, the effect of mine made was bounded by the mine development districts boundaries and transport lines. All these above suggested that the restoration was necessary.4. By considering of the requests the study land, this paper planed the restoration. This plan was on the theory of ecologic restorations. The plan included two parts, one was terrain repair and another was vegetation rebuild, the second one was the important one. For vegetation rebuild was not a project that could be checked instantly, this paper also suggested a plan of continuous surveys by using RS technology.
