V-shaped Progress Management System For Functional Organization

Project progress management is to develop a reasonable and economic plan, and then to ensure that projects are completed on time through supervision, control, correction and other means. For most projects, effective progress management not only means the progress of on-time delivery, but also affects the cost and quality of projects, which directly determine the success or failure of projects. Therefore, project progress management locates in a very essential position throughout the project management process.With the development of management theory and technology, project manager has gained more and more guidance and help in the progress control. However, most small and medium-sized domestic enterprises retain functional organization structure. In this structure, the project manager is commonly in name, or no project manager is set. In practical work, the smooth implementation of projects relies on several functional managers. It is an important guide for the project progress management to further explore the progress management strategy in the functional organization structure, and to in-depth study the management pattern that combining several functional mangers into one project manager.This paper aims at the characteristics of the functional organization, combines with progress management theory outcomes, CMMI process improvement ideas, functional team management practices and project management tools use, and then puts forward and carries out a practical method for progress management in the functional organization basing on project management tool. Firstly, it has summarized the development of project progress management theory, analyzed the progress management basic step as well as its general goals, and narrated the difficulty and the challenge of function organization facing in the progress management. Secondly, it proposes V-shaped management system for functional organization, which focuses on resolving communication and collaboration problems of plans and progress between the departments, and sets up specific progress. Finally, it simply introduces project management tool (Microsoft Project Server), describe the tool-based system guide, and apply the progress management system in specific software R&D organization to test the practicality.
