MES (Manufacturing Execution System) is a type of information system lying between production planning system and production control system in a manufacturing company's information systems. MES have been widely used in Chinese cigarette manufacturing companies.However, with the adoption of Grouping Processing for cigarette manufacturing, MES does not perform well as before in most cigarette manufacturing companies. It is necessary to analyze MES in new context and optimize their performance.In this thesis, we firstly review the history of development of MES. Then we discuss Grouping Processing technology in cigarette manufacturing and its impact on MES in cigarette manufacturing companies. Based on a survey on Chinese cigarette manufacturing companies, we found that most important and necessary improvement for MES is the production-scheduling module. We discuss how to optimize the production-scheduling module in a MES in a cigarette manufacturing company, especially, the model and algorithm for cyclic scheduling in a flexible flow line. We also discuss other issues related to optimization in materials-monitoring module and facility control module. Lastly, we discuss the difficulties in improving MES and some future directions. |
