Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) is a representative kind of Management Information System which has played an important part in the operation of enterprises along with the development of information technology of corporations. But the more competitive marketing of product causes the improved requirement for the manufacture procedure, so enterprises focus not only on the execution results of plan, but also the process of execution of the projects. That gave birth to Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), MES fills up the gap between plan and control system, achieves effectively the data transmission and share between them, and make enterprises strengthen the management and control to the production in workshop. Because of internal differences of discrete manufacturing industries in the level of enterprises information and production process, at present, domestic study about MES for discrete manufacturing is not only lesser, but also not deep enough.Manufacturing Execution Systems studied in this paper aimed at providing a reliable platform in the production process management for discrete manufacturing enterprises. This platform can meet the basic function of MES, which is to connect the planning level and the control level and carry out the planning data transfer layer upon layer and real-time feedback of on-site production data. Accordingly, this paper had a detailed study about discrete MES system for functional structure, data acquisition module and Production monitoring module, set up corresponding function model, data model and process model. Meanwhile, the powerful MES function of data acquisition provides a new means of data collection for the traditional industrial engineering. So this paper also discussed how to generate process flow diagram aided by discrete MES to analyze procedures.This paper used structured modeling method to design and analyze system. IDEF0 modeling tools was used to establish the functional model of the system and its subsystems, entity-relationship model was used to establish the information model, and data flow diagram was used to describe the system process model. Meanwhile, examples were introduced to analyze and demonstrate the system models.This paper can be divided into six parts: In first part and second part paper described the background and significance of the research, analyzed current research and applications of the Discrete Manufacturing Execution System at home and abroad, pointed out the deficiencies in domestic study about discrete MES, and then expounded the theories and models of MES and structured modeling techniques.In third part, combining with features of discrete manufacturing, this paper put forward functional models for discrete MES which are according with ISA-SP95 standards. The model consists of three major functional modules, ten sub-modules, the modules and the relationship between them were described with IDEF0 modeling tools.In fourth part, this paper made a deep study of data acquisition module of discrete MES system, and made a detail analysis about the data which MES needed, the process and methods of data collection, the storage of data information and the impact on data acquisition due to the difference of production types.Data collected was set up the information model with ER diagram, the process of data collection was described with data flow diagram, and an example for demonstration was introduced.In fifth part, this paper made a deep study of production monitoring module of discrete MES system, analyzed production factors which discrete MES needed to monitor, the monitoring information of each production factors, the process and methods of monitoring, and how to deal with abnormal status.In sixth part, through the analysis of the structure and contents of process flow chart, this paper discussed how to generate the process flow chart using the data collected by MES for the use of industrial engineer, and described the generation process using data flow diagram. This is an innovation of this paper.
