Catastrophe theory is introduced to evaluate power grids engineering projects. The fundamental principles and evaluation methods of catastrophe theory were proposed. Evaluation index system was established. An example was evaluated. The result of evaluation is consistent with the actual situations, which indicate the method is scientific and reasonable to evaluate power grids engineering projects. Comparing with other traditional evaluation methods, this method need not to set index weight, and it can reduce subjective factors. This method computes simply and rapidly and provides a new way to evaluate power grids engineering projects.
