In the evaluation of matter-element, numerous characteristics have close correlation between each other which get the analysis and description of the problems difficult, and make the application of conventional priority degree evaluation method encounter some problems. If the greatly correlated characteristics of matter-element reflect exceeding coincidence of information, the feature reduction is significantly important in the evaluation of matter-element.By analyzing the existing research results and the research background and status of comprehensive evaluation of matter-element, the analytical theory of matter-element and factor analysis technology are studied systematically. It's found that using factor analysis, less new characteristic factors are found out to respond more than ninety percent of primitive characteristics, represent the basic structure and reflect essential characteristics of matter-element. The feature reduction of matter-element based on factor analysis technology makes the high dimensional variables decrease dimensions effectively in constructing comprehensive evaluation index system of port competitiveness to process the defined analysis and quantization of indexes, and evaluate the simplified index characteristics by matter-element method.In this paper, Shenzhen port is the research object and the factor analysis is used to simplify the evaluation index of port matter-element. The operation process of evaluation in comprehensive competitiveness of port matter-element is simplified and the case study verifies that the factor analysis is one of the effective methods in matter-element feature reduction. Based on the deep analysis of main factors about market competitiveness of ports, the evaluation index system of port comprehensive competitiveness is constructed. The transverse and longitudinal evaluation analysis of comprehensive competitiveness between Shenzhen port and peripheral ports is done to find out its advantages and disadvantages in competition, enhance advantages and reduce disadvantages pertinently, find gaps between ports, and propose reasonable improvement and suggestions according to evaluation results. It is greatly significant to provide the basis for the government decision-making, industrial adjustment, industry long-term planning, and increase comprehensive competitiveness of ports.
