Entering in the 21 century, along with the economic steadily development and the vigorous development of tourist industry in world, some great changes on the pattern and structure of tourist industry are occurring. One of them is that the modern tour has taking place of the traditional tour. The traditional tour attaches importance to sightseeing, while the modern tour is given first place to lie fallow, loosens, healthy aspect and amusement. Sports tourism is a type with development rapid and wide foreground.Sports tourism was started very late in China, but developed very quickly, especially with China's entry WTO and the future 2008 Beijing Olympic Games which provide good opportunity for the development of sports tourism. Recently, different sports travel activities were carried out quickly, for instance, national travel bureau successfully brought "Chinese sports practical travel" in 2001.The 60 local sports practical travel activities as well as 80 specific sports practical travel products and route made the tourists from home and abroad feel the charm of Chinese sports travel products. Although sports travel has been gradually developed, yet Chinese sports travel standards for only 5 percent in tourism. Sports tourism still has great developmental potential and developmental room.In this paper, based on regional sports tourism development, use methods of literature studies, field visits, systems analysis, case studies etc, the development of sports tourism within the region's basic theories is expounded.Firstly, we analyze the basic meaning of sports tourism, four types of sports tourism, including resort type, leisure entertainment type, sightseeing and folk-type, as well as analysis of the characteristics of the sports tourism, sports tourism to the development of the basic principles.Aim at regional development of sports tourism, the regional development theories is exposited.
