Through over 30 years of development, the management for long distance pipeline construction in China has made great achievements with much change in terms of the organization of projects. The management approach has developed from the original headquarters approach to the present EPC general contracting approach. The project management level has improved rapidly with several specialized pipeline construction companies emerged and many management professionals matured. However, comparatively speaking, there is still a gap in the management level for pipeline projects between China and the world advanced level. It is of instructive value both in theory and practice for pipeline contractors to study the organization of long distance pipeline construction and the management strategy in the present situation.Firstly, this article discusses the meaning, the features and the functions of a project and project management. In addition, the development history of project management is introduced from both domestic and abroad aspects. Secondly, this dissertation focuses on the characteristics, structural model and both advantages and disadvantages of the parallel contract approach, engineering or construction contracting and subcontracting approach, project contracting approach, and project contracting management approach. Next, the paper gives readers a general picture of the abroad newly developed approaches including CM approach, EPC approach, Partnering approach in terms of their definitions, features, classification, application, background of development, as well as their contractual structures. Meanwhile, the thesis concludes the major courses of the development of the headquarters approach, the parallel contracting approach and the EPC contracting approach.The article analyses in detail the current situation of domestic pipeline projects, and the major problems existing in the domestic parallel contracting approach, EPC contracting approach and the applicable EPC contracting approach. Also, the article studies CPP's project organization and management of the EPC project, and introduces an introduction of CPP and its experience. Based on of the operation of the CPP and EPC projects, the article summarizes the soul of the project management in CPP. Finally, in order to enhancing project management, several suggestions are put forward from the view of contractor. It is expected that this article will be helpful for the project managements, relevant government departments, project owners and the professionals who study the management of pipeline projects in China.
