Competitiveness is the everlasting theme of market economy. With the development of economic globalization, in international market, competitiveness between countries is becoming more and more severe. Owing to different economic strength and different degree of division of labor, countries show different ability in the competition. Since the reform and opening to the outside world, China's foreign trade has developed greatly, making China a large trading nation and on the road to becoming a powerful one. However, China's foreign trade is faced with low export benefit and deteriorating trade environment. To solve the problem and develop from a large trading nation into a powerful one, China must probe into the status of its foreign trade, analyze its foreign trade competitiveness, relative factors and the existing problems, and study the policies and measures to upgrade its foreign trade competitiveness.Foreign trade competitiveness refers to the ability which domestic commodities, industry and foreign trade enterprises in a country or a region open up and occupy markets and gain profits in the foreign market, including country competitiveness, industry competitiveness, commodity competitiveness and enterprise competitiveness. In all five chapters of the thesis, China's foreign trade competitiveness is analyzed both quantitatively and qualititatively. The first chapter talks about the background and significance of the study, summarization of the relative study both at home and abroad, content, method and speciality of the study. The second chapter analyzes the concept and the origin of foreign trade competitiveness. Relative concepts of foreign trade competitiveness and the correlation are analyzed. The theoretical origin of foreign trade competitiveness is discussed from the angle of the main points of traditional international trade theories, new international trade theories,international investment theories and national competitiveness advantage theory. Then the effect of the interpretation of these theories to the China's foreign trade competitiveness is presented. The third chapter is about the experience and the revelation of the promotion of foreign trade competitiveness, which mainly introduces the policies and measures to promote foreign trade competitiveness in Japan, Korea and Germany and the enlightenments to China. The fourth chapter is the demonstrative analysis and the evaluation of China's foreign trade competitiveness. On the basis of the evaluation index system, according to the trading statistics for years, this chapter analyzes the single index and factor of China's foreign trade competitiveness as well as the comprehensive evaluation, so as to make clear the level, position and gap of China's foreign trade competitiveness. Chapter five discusses the strategies to upgrade China's foreign trade competitiveness. With the guidance of relative international trade theories, according to the successful experience of Japan, Korea and Germany, based on status of China's export commodities competitiveness, the thesis probes into China's foreign trade measures.The conclusion of the thesis is as follows.In China's foreign trade competitive- ness, quantity factors play a more important role than quality and benefit factors; there is strong potential gain in foreign trade.China's export goods lack in competitiveness in quality and there is low benefit of trade. However, the advantage of quantity offsets the disadvantage of quality of the exports. China's foreign trade competitiveness is boosting up yearly, but relatively weak. Competitiveness in primary products decreases slightly, while competitiveness in manufactured products are increasing. More capital-intensive products are exported than labor-intensive ones, but labor-intensive products enjoy more comparative advantage. There is a continous optimization in China's export commodity structure and an annually-increasing international market share. However, terms of trade are deteriorating yearly and trade benefit does not increase in pace with its quantity. China's inner-industrial trade exceeds its inter-industrial trade and develops very fast, which mostly is upright- inner-industrial trade coming from process trade. And the inner-industrial trade is limited in the stage of low value-added process assembly and its participation in international division of labor has not been improved simultaneously.For the sake of upgrading foreign trade competitiveness, such countermeasure and advice as follows should be taken: to implement competitive advantage-oriented balanced trade strategy, to lay stress both on comparative advantage and on competitive advantage, to perfect foreign trade promotion system and build a fair competition environment, to strengthen technology innovation and build international famous brands, to adjust industrial structure and speedup the upgrading of commodity structure, to establish large-sized multinational enterprises and advance foreign direct investment.
