With the gradual removal of the constraints since 1960s, trade in services has been experiencing very rapid development and become critical to the development of world economy and trade. It has also become a topic of multilateral trade negotiations. International trade in services is a new field of international competitions and it is one of the key factors regarding the international competitiveness of a nation. Therefore, as one of the important measures to facilitate national economic development and extend international trade, all countries especially developed ones have speared no efforts promoting the liberalization of trade in services.Trade in goods has long dominated the international trade while trade in services has been a supplement. In the near future they will be of equal importance to the international trade and trade in services will surpass trade in goods in the long run. Trade in services has been developed very rapidly during the last thirty years and has now become an important index of the modernization development status of a country.Liberalization of trade in services is an irresistible trend with the faster growth of globalization of world economy. It has great effect on the design and implementation of national service policies. The liberalization of the trade in services will undoubtedly have a deeply effect on the development of Chinese service industry and the whole economy. Currently Chinese government has been gradually implementing its commitments to the WTO, which need further opening the domestic services market and quickening the process of service trade liberalization. In the face of the new trend, we should understand its influences and scientifically design national strategies to accelerate the development of Chinese trade in services based on the combination of new trend and practical situation.This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter one and Chapter two introduce contents and characteristics of international trade in services and discuss the welfare effect of its liberalization. Chapter three retrospect the history of liberalization of trade in services focusing on the efforts made by WTO and GATT as well as major regional organizations. It also summarizes the challenges WTO facing in the process of promoting services trade liberalization and WTO's solutions. Chapter Four analyses the new trend of services trade liberalization. Chapter Five summarize the current status of China's trade in services and then points out its shortcomings and proposes suggestions under the new circumstances.
