The Empirical Research On The Relationship Between Economic Growth And Environmental Change Of Guangdong Province During Its Industrial Process

Using the theory hypothesis of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), this paper addresses to the empirical research on the relationship between economic growth and environmental change of Guangdong Province during its industrial process from 1985 to 2003. Based on the "N" shape environmental curve of Guangdong, this paper suggests that there may be many possible factors, but the main one would be the change of the economic structure. So far, the EKC of Guangdong presents generally the upswing trend, but it also has a downturn period during these observed years. The main possible causes of facilitating EKC enter into the downturn period, on one hand, is the diversion of the highly-polluted economic activities that caused by technological advantages and the changes of the economic structure, on the other hand, is that our government has strengthened the investment in environmental protection. Thus, the author suggests that policy makers should not apply the EKC hypothesis blindly, cannot count on that economic growth, by itself, will solve environmental problems. Our government should give rein to the basis effect of the public policies, and facilitate technological advantage and industrial upgrading, moreover, accelerate the development of Knowledge-service Industry, Green Industry, Environmental Protection Industry and Circular Economy. And finally, we will achieve the aim of the Economy's Sustainable Development of Guangdong.
