Limiting Factors And Countermeasures For Development Of Hybrid Rice Industry At Nanping City

Nanping City is the staple area of food production in Fujian province, and its food sowing area, total grain output and the annual amount of supplying marketable grain are all ranked first in Fujian province. Rice is the most important food crop at Nanping City and playing a very significant role in ensuring food security for Fujian province.In this study, we reviewed the research and development of hybrid rice at home and abroad, then analyzed the course of development of rice, the advantages of the development of hybrid rice. as well as the status quo of hybrid rice including variety, extending area, grain yield, benefit and industrialization by using the methods of status quo analysis, summary analysis and the research of development countermesures at Nanping City. As a result, Nanping City has a good foundation for the development of hybrid rice industry.However there are some limiting factors for the development of hybrid rice industry at Nanping City. We analyzed these factors related to ecological condition, benefit, variety, technical service system and industrialization, and found the limiting facors of the development of hybrid rice industry at Nanping City. These mainly include:a great deal of middle-and low-yielding paddy fields, hybrid rice prone to blast damage during growth phase; the decrease of benefit from growing hybrid rice and not reflecting comprehensive production benefit of good-quality rice cultivars;a single genetic diversity of major cultivated hybrid rice varieties and lack of the variety with excellent traits; inferior to the popularization for corresponding integrated cultivation techniques with high yield and efficiency, an incomplete extension system of agricultural technology, a slow rate of extending good-quality hybrid rice, and a random varietial distribution; an insufficiency of investment in farmland infrastructure, a small-scale industry, a short industrial chain of rice processing companies, and a low value of additational product.Therefore, according to above-mentioned these limiting factors, main countermeasures for the development of hybrid rice industry at Nanping City are proposed as follows:1.Developing good hybrid rice varieties characterized by high yield, good quality, resistance to disease and lodging, insusceptible shattering through the innovation of selection technology and the adjustment of breeding goals; introducing and screening new hybrid rice varieties with excellent comprehensive characters to be deposited for providing good rice varieties in the replacement of varieties.2.Rice varieties should be adjusted measures to local conditions and rational distribution. Choosing and arranging different kinds of rice varieties based on varietal characteristics, ecological conditions and cropping patterns to fully exhibit heterosis and obtain the best profit.3.Studying and popularizing light cultivaiton techniques with low cost and high benefit; good-quality, high yield, high efficency, safe and ecological cultivation techniques; ratoon rice cultivation techniques; foundation seed production techniques for hybrid rice; strengthening science and technology training, improving the network of agricultural technology extension and the system of technical service, and speeding up the popularization and application of new varieties and new technologies.4.Strengthening the construction of agricultural infrastructure, Keeping up the stability of food farmland and speeding up the transfer of land, promoting the support for the extension of excellent varieties, popularizing agricultural insurance in rice, innovating the mode of information service and improving social service system in order to ensure successive and steady development of hybrid rice industry at Nanping City.5.Attaching importance to the protection of property right, establishing and improving seed industrialization to enhance market competitiveness of seed companies, supporting the great food producers and farmer speciality cooperatives, carrying out intensive farming on a large scale, building a famous brand and supporting big companies of rice processing, inaugurating industrial business pattern as well as expanding industrial chain of growing food to promote comprehensive benefits of hybrid rice production and sustainable and healthy development of hybrid rice industry at Nanping City.
