Rural ecological environment has been devastated and overused with the fast development in villages and towns in recent years. The natural landscape patterns are now changing gradually: not only did the fragmentation degree increase, the diversity degree decreased as well. In China’s ―12th Five Year Plan‖, one of the essential goals is to enhance the ecological protection in rural areas and create a harmonious rural natural landscape pattern. Due to the rigorous cold climate and high latitude, the landscape pattern in cold climate area has its unique natural and social character. But because of the same reason, researches of this subject are also few.The emergence of remote sensing and geography system broke the limitation of time and location in landscape pattern study. This study takes Chenggaozi Town in Heilongjiang Province as examples. Satellite images from GF-1 and Landsat-7 ETM+ are the main data resource. Based on related princi ples and theories, the landscape pattern can be divided into six categories which are forest, grass, farm land, barren land, water, and built up area. After using Atmospheric correction, Ortho rectification and Band synthesis to standardize the raw data, the landscape pattern in the study area was divided according to Support Vector Machine of supervised classification. The data accuracy was also tested and evaluated after the division. The new category was manually corrected and rasterized based on geographical system technology, then the landscape pattern index was calculated by FRAGSTATS 3.4. The landscape pattern evolution was compared with itself and other similar towns in shape, area, fragmentation, dominance, convergence and diversity. The result shows that the landscape pattern development in the two towns is of great discrepancy which can be due to four factors: climate, location, urbanization and industry development. Finally, conceptual landscape master plan will be purposed according to each town’s unique situation and planning theory. The research experience in this thesis can give light to future study in landscape pattern in rural villages, and help to improve practical study theory in urban planning in China.
