As one of the most important features, insect song contains intricate biological significances. Studies on song characteristic not only reveal the relation between behavior and songs, but also genetic relationship between individuals. The characteristic of songs is stable, which has the specificity for inter-species. The diversity of song characteristic can distinguish similar species, especially relative species. In this thesis the characteristic of male calling songs for 14 katydid species and five Atlanticus brunneri Pylnov populations from Northeast China were analyzed. The results indicated that:1. The type of chirp, chirp duration, chirp interval, pulse duration, pulse interval and the interval between peaks of neighboring syllables of different species of Tettigonioidea has obvious differences. Comparing the variation of songs characteristic can distinguish morphologically similar species and relative species.2. The characteristic of male calling songs of katydids in the same family or genus was similar. These similar characteristics can be common features of a family or genus and become an important standard of identifying species.3. The characteristic of male calling songs of five Atlanticus brunneri Pylnov populations had similarity and difference. The geographical isolation created these differences of songs. Long time geographic isolation might lead to the reproduction isolation and then to the differenciation of local population (or subspecies).
