Starting with the historical and technological background of meteorological science and technology communication between mainland China and Taiwan, this paper reviews the development of meteorological communication and cooperation cross the Taiwan Strait in detail, which is divided into four stages:1949-1982 is the stage of miscommunication; 1982-1988 is the stage of communicating with the help of a third party; 1988-1993 is the stage of information asymmetry; and 1994-2014 is the stage of two-way communication through the meteorological society. The main body and contents of meteorological communication are also summarized in this paper. The main body includes official institutions, social organizations, universities and research institutions, and the fields of communication include meteorological and climatic study on east Asia and west Pacific areas, rainfall experiments cross the Strait and nearby areas, academic discussion on meteorology cross the Strait, meteorological journals exchange, and real-time consultation about disaster weather in Fujian and Taiwan.Through summing up the development, main body and contents of meteorological science and technology exchange process between mainland China and Taiwan, it can be discovered that the communication is promoted by decision making, improved relation cross the Strait, and policies of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). Meanwhile, strong complementarity in the scientific and technological level of meteorology makes it an internal requirement for cooperation. Furthermore, meteorological scientists and technicians are eager for mutual perception and shared the common wish of promoting meteorological communication cross the Strait. Other motivations as geographical relationship, consanguinity, language and humanistic factors are also promoting the communication in meteorology between both sides. However, it is restricted by the difference in ideology and administrative mechanism at the same time.According to this study, the communication platform based on non-governmental exchange through meteorological society can no longer meet the requirements of both mainland and Taiwan to fight for natural disasters together. On the other hand, areas restricted in Fujian and Taiwan for meteorological communication also need to be expanded. There are strong complementarity and broad cooperation areas between mainland China and Taiwan, and nowadays, a mechanism has formed for meteorological science and technology communication. Therefore, it is expected to have regular exchange between both areas, which is significant to improve meteorological science and technology level, safeguard people’s life and property and promote a peaceful relation of mainland China and Taiwan.
