China is one of the countries with frequent geological disasters in the world. In order to protect people’s life and property, the governments have spent a lot of manpower and money to geological disasters monitoring and prevention. Establishing the geological disasters management information system by WebGIS technology is one of an important job. The development of most traditional practical WebGIS systems is based on big-scale business platform, so there are a series of problem in openness, extensibility and economics. However, open source GIS platform can solve these problems effectively. In the respect of WebGIS development technology, the integration of Ajax with Web Services can not only solve the traditional thin client system’s problems in expression and corresponding speed, but also solve the fat client system’s problems in system load. It makes the balance of the client and server.Based on the demand of geological disaster management information system, this paper discussed the development techniques and implementation methods of the new WebGIS system relying on open source GIS platform and using Ajax and Web Services technology. Firstly, this paper analyzed Ajax and Web Services technology, and introduced the open source GIS platform including Geoserver and PostgreSQL/PostGIS as well. Secondly, this paper elaborated the system overall design and database design in detail, focused on the study of key technology in client development, server development and the interactions between them. Finally, this paper showed the detail design of system function algorithm, and initially implemented the most function of geological disaster management information system. This research has made the following results and conclusions.1) Focusing on system development platform, this paper has analyzed the principles and characteristics of the main open source GIS software platform to explore the feasibility and advantage of WebGIS system development based on open source GIS software, and has put forward a more economical and efficient solution of WebGIS system development.2) Based on Ajax and Web Services technology, this paper has made the research of key technology among WebGIS system development. As a result, this paper has resolved the load balanced problem between client and server and offered a template development Framework to other WebGIS system.3) This paper has made the research of the technology about spatial data integration and management based PostGIS /PostgreSQL.4) From design to implementation of geological disasters management information, this paper has studied the whole progress of WebGIS system development. Finally, we have built a WebGIS system which can meet the real world’s needs.
