A study on WEBGIS and its implementation that is based on Ajax technology is presented in this paper by introducing Ajax technology particularly and other web technologies which can be used in the field of WEBGIS, for instances, LAN, Internet, XML WebService etc. Then a comparison has been made between WEBGIS based on Ajax technology and those based on other technologies such as CGI, ServerAPI, Plug-Ins, ActiveX, Java Applet, ASP, or ASP.NET and so on.An analysis and a model have been made for WEBGIS based on Ajax technology on the basis of Ajax Technology, TCP/IP and HTTP protocols. And then a simple WEBGIS MapServer supported by MapX, a GIS Request Proxy server supported by ASP.NET and a client supported by Ajax technology have been implemented. The simple WEBGIS system which includes the above three parts has been tested to be successful and to be our expected. In this paper, the author reaches the conclusion that WEBGIS based on Ajax technology has the following advantages: It doesn't limited by the various web browsers, can be accessed quickly, can be customized and extended, can make asynchronous requests between the client and the server and is cheaper for development. In the end of this paper the points that should be improved for WEBGIS based on Ajax have been pointed out and the development prospect of it has been expected.
