Cui Chaoqing’s Contribution To Mordern And Contemporary Chinese Mathematics Education

Cui Chaoqing(1860-1943), is a famous Chinese mathematician, mathematics educator and math translator in late Qing dynasty. He devoted his entire life to China’s mathematics education through his involvement in activities such as translating mathematics textbooks, establishing academic institutions and journal of mathematics and being a math teacher in many school. Cui Chaoqing made outstanding contribution to the modernization of mathematics education. This paper is divided into five parts:Chaper Ⅰ: Introduction. The introduction elaborates the historical background, purpose, significance, review of literature, research methods, and innovations of the study.Chapter Ⅱ : The life of Cui Chaoqing. The paper discussed Cui Chaoqing’s mathematical life through introducing Cui Chaoping’s life events such as: academic exchanges, academic achievements, mathematical teaching practice as well as the evaluation by the posterity.Chapter Ⅲ : Mathematics textbooks which are translated by Cui Chaoqing. Introduction about the background, preface, compile style, concept, content, features, nouns and terms of books like Sawada goiti’s Textbook Wrutten Calculation 、Isaac Todhunter’s Plane Trigonometry、Tanaka naonori’s Arithmetic textbook for junior high school and Elementary Algebra textbook、Nagasawa kamenosuke’s Plane Geometry textbook for junior high school. which are the highlight of Cui Chaoqing’s translation works.Chapter Ⅳ : A general overview of popular science books and teaching guidance books which are translated by Cui Qingchao. This paper has systematically analyzed the style of compilation, terminology, content, features and impact of popular science books that are translated by Cui Qingchao, at the same time, Cui Chaoqing has shed light on the historical significance and impact of new textbooks of Minguo period from 1920 to 1949 and other math guidance books which are compiled by Cui Chaoqing. These works accomplished by Cui Chaoqing generated positive influence on the later teaching of mathematics.Chapter Ⅴ : Mathematics activities initiated by Cui Qingchao. Through an overall and in-depth study of “Mathematics Society”, which was organized by Cui Chaoqing, “The mathematical curriculum exercise”, in which he was the chief editor, Mathematical Journal which was established by him, this paper aims to elaborate on the positive impact of Cui Chaoqing’s works on popularization of mathematical knowledge.This study systematically summarized Cui Chaoqing’s significant contribution for mathematics education, illuminated the historical significance of Cui Chaoqing’s Mathematics textbook,scientific book and Mathematical Activity, and his patriotic spirit for mathematics education. By analyzing Cui Chaoqing’s view of mathematics and mathematics education, the study summarized its inspiration and reference to the current mathematics education.
