The Research On Fu Zhongsun’s Contributions To Mathematics And Mathematics Education

Fu Zhongsun (1898-1962), is a famous mathematician, mathematics educationist in China, one of the pioneers of Chinese modern mathematics and modern mathematics education. In nearly40years of teaching career, he has made great contributions to mathematics education in China, especially in middle school mathematics education by translating western classical mathematical works, introducing mathematical philosophy and geometry principle to China, writing textbooks and journals, training middle school teachers, promoting the education reform etc. The thesis is divided into five parts:The first chapter, describes the purpose, significance, relevant research at home and broad, methods and innovations of the research.The second chapter is about life experience and academic contributions of Fu Zhongsun. Introduces Fu Zhongsun’s life experience, books and academic papers written by him.The third chapter is the research of Fu Zhongsun’s academic work. The research is about Fu Zhongsun’s translation "Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy"(originally written by Russell) and his work on the foundation of geometry. By analyzing "Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy" and relevant academic argument, translation of Hilbert’s "Foundations of Geometry" and his own work "Research on the Foundations of Geometry", finally explaining the advanced and important significance of Fu Zhongsun’s academic work, such as introducing mathematical philosophy and foundations of geometry to domestic in his early career.The fourth chapter is the research of textbooks written by Fu Zhongsun. By analyzing the content, writing ideas and mathematics education thoughts of "Elementary Mixed Mathematics" and "Plane Geometry textbook for senior high school", evaluating these two sets of textbooks’status in history of the development of textbooks and influence on middle school mathematics education objectivly, also discussing Fu Zhongsun’s contributions to textbooks writing history domestically.The fifth chapter is the research on Fu Zhongsun’s mathematical activities. Fu Zhongsun has participated in various activities, such as work for Chinese Mathematical Society, being an editor in chief of "Chinese Mathematical Journal", dedicate to teacher training, participation in education reform etc. He has made great contributions to Chinese mathematics education, especially in middle school mathematics education. Also we can show a selfless mathematics educationist with dedicatory spirit and exploring Fu Zhongsun’s great contributions to steady development of Chinese mathematics education by researching Fu Zhongsun’s main mathematical activities.Systematically summarizing Fu Zhongsun’s contributions to Mathematics and Mathematics Educantion, exploring Fu Zhongsun’s mathematical education thoughts are the starting point of this research. Carry on a further study of Fu Zhongsun’s mathematics education thoughts on the basis of the study on Fu Zhongsun’s translation, textbook and mathematical activities. Aiming at the situation of insufficient evaluation of Fu Zhongsun’s academic contributions, presenting Fu Zhongsun’s contributions to mathematics and mathematics education completely, also reveal the value of Fu Zhongsun’s mathematics education thoughts and its enlightenment for present mathematical education at the same time.
