China is in the stage of rapid urbanization nowadays. The performance of rapid urbanization is not only in the increase of the proportion of the urban population, but also in the change of the urban landscape pattern, employment and industrial structure, urban land scale.Urban landscape pattern is a true reflection of the process of interaction of man-land system in the geographical space. The temporal and spatial variation of the urban landscape pattern shows the process of urbanization. Research on the temporal and spatial variation characteristic, evolution pattern and formation mechanism of the urban landscape pattern has important theoretical and practical significance for achieving the city’s sustainable development. The traditional analytical investigation of the temporal and spatial variation of urban landscape works better for analysis the characteristic of urban landscape pattern changing with time, but relatively weak for analysis the spatial variation characteristic. In view of this status quo, the essay tries to study the formation and dynamic change characteristics of urban landscape comprehensively from the view of time and space. The essay takes Wuxi city as the study area, based on the support of RS and GIS software, the processing of remote sensing image data software ENVI is used to get the land use or cover data of Wuxi city by interpreting the multi-temporal remote sensing image firstly. Then, taking the ArcGIS and Fragstats3.3landscape analysis software as platform, the landscape pattern index of Wuxi city is calculated to study the time evolution characteristics of urban landscape pattern in the last30years from the view of landscape patch type index and landscape level index. Finally, the Wuxi city’s building land is been scale transferred with different scale of aggregation window by the application of Matlab software. Since then the main landscape evolution direction and broken degree of Wuxi city’s building land are analyzed based on the space histo-variogram. The space evolution process of building land’ landscape in the main urban areas of Wuxi city is systematically analyzed. The main conclusions of this essay are summarized as follows:(1) By calculating the land use landscape index in Wuxi city, the time variation characteristic of urban landscape pattern for Wuxi city is got in the last30years. The result shows, the landscape pattern is single mainly in large patches before year2000, but after year2000, some big patches break and the number of different patches of landscape types constantly increase by the greatly influenced of human activities with the continuous progress of urbanization. Where the farmland landscape and gardens are disturbed by human in the most extent, the number and density of patches show fluctuation, a large amount of farmland landscape is gradually evolved into building land or other landscape types along the process of urbanization. Building land is in a growth trend during year1980-2005, the number and density of patches increase continually. As the rationalization of urban planning, during year2005-2010, the number of building land patches is in a small drop, the fragmentation has been improved.(2) Using Matlab and Origin software to scale transfer the building land’s landscape with different scale of aggregation window, then draw the landscape histo-variogram of building land for Wuxi city according to the result of scale transformation. The result shows that building land in Wuxi City does not have a significant main direction, and the formation of the main direction trend is not obvious. In the last15years, the fragmentation degree of building land in Wuxi city is in a trend of rising, but the rising rate slows down in recent years.
