The ultra-weak biophoton emission (UPE) is a general phenomenon of living systems innature, and is an inherent function of organism. It is different from the generalbioluminescence only existing in certain special lives, such as the flash from fireflies andsome luminescent bacteria, but a more general luminous phenomenon of organisms existingin various biological systems ranging from microbes to animals and plants. This biophotonemission is very weak with intensities from tens to thousands photons per square centimeterper second, which equivalent to the illumination of a candle in the10km away, and thespectrum region of it is200-800nm. Studies found that UPE has a high degree of sensitivityto the changes of internal state or external environment of the organisms, and it carries richinformation of a life which is closely related to a great number of fundamental life processes, such as cell division, oxidative metabolism, energy transformation, information transfer, growth regulation, tumor occurrence and death etc., and those have brought new impetus andtechnology for the research of life science field. So the UPE has become one of the importantresearch directions of the current biophoton correlation disciplines. However, the generationmechanism of UPE has two theoretical hypothesis, they are coherence theory and metabolictheory. In recent years, along with the continuously going deep into of the research of UPE,the biophoton coherence theory is recognized by more and more researchers. Although thereare some different opinions upon the mechanism of UPE, it has been widely used in manyfields, such as medicine, agriculture, food, pharmaceutical and environment etc., not onlybecause that it can be sensible to reflect the whole information of the internal differences andthe external environment of the biological system, which can provide a comprehensive indexof the basic characteristics of biological systems, but also because that the detection technology of it is rapid, sensitive, noninvasive and reliable. As we all known, the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) emphasizes the holistic views,so is Chinese herbs which is a branch of the TCM. From the view of TCM, the indexcomponents in Chinese herbs are difficult to really reflect its efficiency. The treatments ofTCM use the flavor of a drug and not a chemical composition, so we must control the qualityof whole herbs not only for one or a few chemical compositions. The chemical compositionsin Chinese herbs is very complex, and it is extremely difficult to clearly research eachcomposition of herbs in order to control the quality of them. So it requires us to achieve thecontrol of the whole under the circumstances that all the chemical compositions are stillunclear, which is difficult for the physicochemical identification to achieve currently. So wemust find another way in order to have a qualitative breakthrough. Luckily, the UPE based onthe coherence theory can reflect the holistic internal information of the biological system, which can be detected by the biophoton detection system without any damage to the samplesso as to keep the invariant properties of the original sample. Based on this, this paper conductsa tentative study on the characteristics of the biophoton emission of the Chinese herbs in thegrowth process in order to find the correlation between the characteristics of the UPE and thequality of the Chinese herbs. The main work and results of this paper are summarized as follows:1. This paper introduced the structure characteristics and the basic working principle of thebiophoton detection system in detail.2. Researched on the affecting factors of the SNR, stability and repeatability of the biophotondetection system, and improved the design of some parts of the detection system, as well asimproved the performance of this detection system. In addition, we also detected the effect ofthe different experimental conditions and different sample treatment methods on the UPE ofsamples, and determined the best optimum of experimental conditions and sample treatmentmethod.3. Detected the UPE’s characteristics of several fresh Chinese herbs in different types, different quality and different growth stages. The results showed that, there are significantdifferences in UPE’s characteristics among the different types, different quality and differentgrowth stages of the Chinese herbs. These preliminary studies indicated that the fresh Chinese herbs of different types, different quality and different growth stages can be identified in thelevel of biophoton, which provided support for preliminary experiments for identification ofChinese herbs. However, whether it is universal still needs further experimental verification.
